UC Grad Student Strike and Jail Reform at SC Roundtable this Fri., Nov. 18th
This Friday, November 18th at noon SBCAN will discuss the UC graduate student worker strike. Yesterday 48,000 workers across all ten UC campuses started the largest academic strike in the history of the nation. We will also hear from folks at the League of Women Voters of Santa Barbara (LWVSB) and Clergy & Laity for Economic Justice (CLUE) about their petition to transform criminal justice in Santa Barbara County.

Bailey Ave SOI at North County Roundtable this Thur., 5pm
This Thursday, November 10th at 5 p.m., we will hear from Maggie Hall from the Environmental Defense Center about the efforts of the City of Lompoc to expand their Sphere of Influence (SOI) to include the Bailey Ave corridor. For more than 20 years SBCAN has been opposing this expansion in support of protecting prime agricultural land. For the last several years, Alejandra Gutierrez has voted against rent control and other tenant protections. Now she's agreed to sit down with the community to talk rent control and see how we can move forward. With a 7 person city council and 3 votes currently in support of rent control, Alejandra Gutierrez could be the deciding vote on the matter.Bring your family and friends to this community meeting to talk about our housing crisis and get real about what's at stake for us all. The City of Santa Maria heard our concerns about community accessibility and added another Fair Housing workshop next Monday, on Nov. 7 at 5:30 pm at the Library with the option to attend virtually. Short Term Rentals at SC Roundtable Oct 21st
Meagan Harmon, Santa Barbara City Councilmember, will join us this Friday, October 21st, for our South County Roundtable. We will discuss the City's draft Short Term Rental ordinance and the council's recent decision to allocate $250,000 over the next three years to the Housing Trust Fund. Hope to see you there! -
Truth Act Forum at BOS on Tues, Oct. 18

The Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors has planned the next TRUTH Act Forum for Tuesday, 10/18, tentatively around 2pm (at the end of the Board of Supervisors Meeting agenda). You can register to join here (to give public comment, register for Agenda Item #3). This is the annual meeting in which our County Sheriff's Office has to report on any collaborative activity with ICE. We were not made aware of the TRUTH Act Forum until the end of last week, and so we are scrambling to organize local advocates to join the meeting. -
North County Roundtable Thurs. Oct. 14, 5pm
Join us for our regularly scheduled North County Roundtable this Thursday, October 13th at 5pm via zoom. We will hear from Abe Melendrez from Corazón del Pueblo about their new community center and their upcoming Día de los Muertos celebrations. Frank Rodriguez from CAUSE will also discuss the Truth Act forum that the County Board of Supervisors will hold next Thursday. There will be plenty of time for community updates this week, so please come and feel free to share what you have been working on.Our South County Roundtable has been postponed to next week: Friday October 21st from 12-1:30pm. -
Corazón del Pueblo Open House on Fri., Oct. 14 6-8 p.m.
Corazón del Pueblo is hosting an open house at their new community center! Come celebrate the grand opening on Friday, October 14 from 6 - 8 p.m. upstairs at 201 E Main St., Santa Maria.
Corazón del Pueblo is Santa Marias first Latinx Cultural and Creative Center. They offer free art supplies for families and youth, art exhibits for local artists, community events and workshops, and a place for Santa Maria residents to practice art and share their culture.

Trail Entry at Bonita School Road
We hope you will speak up at a public meeting Thursday, Sept. 29 to make sure that entry points for the Santa Maria River Levee Trail are included when the Bonita School Road bridge is replaced.The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. with a presentation on the proposed bridge replacement at 6:50 p.m.The meeting is at Bonita Elementary School at 2715 W. Main Street, Santa Maria.It is important that there are advocates at the meeting that speak in favor of the trail so that the bridge is built with an entry/exit point for the trail in mind.Please attend the meeting if you can and invite others who are in favor of the trail.
