South County Roundtable

We will be joined this Friday by tenants rights activists to discuss the issue of renovictions: when landlords evict tenants to do renovations in order to drastically raise the rent. There are updates about this issue in both the City of Santa Barbara and in Isla Vista. We will also hear from the United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 770 (UFCW 770) about their efforts to stop the planned Kroger-Albertson's merger.

AGENDA

  1. Call to Order Introductions; Agenda Review
  2. Renovictions - The Santa Barbara Tenants Union (SBTU) is seeing more and more cases of tenants being displaced due to their landlords claiming the need to complete renovations, only for the unit to go back on the market for double the rent, sometimes with only a fresh coat of paint. Last Thursday, nearly 200 residents in 3 buildings in Isla Vista received notice that they have to vacate their apartments because the property owner intends to renovate the units. We will hear from members of SBTU about this issue and what can be done to support tenants.
  3. Kroger-Albertson's Merger- Colyn Messecar from UFCW Local 770 will tell us about the effort to stop the planned Kroger-Albertson's merger, what the merger would mean for workers and consumers, and how we can support.
  4. Our next meetings are to be determined and will be via Zoom.
